Award-winning renovation with Alanod material
The 45-year-old School of Design and Environment 3 (SDE3) building at the National University of Singapore (NUS) has undergone a transformative renovation that has significantly improved energy efficiency, occupant comfort and sustainability. The project, which used Alanod MIRO® 20 reflective surfaces for the building's redesigned west façade, was recently awarded the title of 'Project of the Year 2024' in the 'International, Sustainability' category by the Society of Facade Engineers (SFE) at an awards ceremony in London in November 2024.
Instead of demolishing the building, NUS decided to renovate it by installing a three-meter-long 'light shelf' made of MIRO® 20 surfaces with 95% light reflection. This design reflects daylight into the ceiling and converts direct sunlight into soft, diffused light while minimizing glare.
Other significant improvements included the introduction of hybrid ventilation, a remote cooling system and occupancy sensors, resulting in a five-fold reduction in energy consumption. The refurbishment also reduced the embodied carbon of the building by seven times compared to a new build, and occupant satisfaction increased from 40% to 90%. With planned solar panels, the building will become a zero-energy building.
The success of the SDE3 refurbishment underlines the power of sustainable refurbishments and shows impressive results in terms of environmental and occupant wellbeing.
